So last night, a few friends an myself partook in the swankiness of the South End. We decided to go to the DeLux Cafe on 100 Chandler St. Let me start off by saying the food was excellent. The were able to take the concept of 'comfort food', and make it tangible. Our group started off with some fresh fruit salsa, with a HUGE dollop of sour cream. The "chips" they accompanied the salsa with were fresh tortillas that had been cut into triangles, then toasted lightly in a fry pan. I got a roasted chicken thigh, that had been butteryflied, with the bone partially removed. It was tender, juicy, and very flavorful because of the light, herbed breading. It was homely in flavor, right to the little bit of the leg bone left in that you were able to pick and nibble at. Good time, good food. Now the downers... One of our compatriots asked for a pilsner. Upon bringing it to the table, the server let's him know, "by the way, that's the bottom of keg." Now any good server, bartender, whatever, knows that you tell the person this BEFORE you bring them the beer. Also, a restaurant should never be filled with smoke when you walk in. I felt like I walked into a house that was being bug bombed! Lastly, the service (at least our table) could've been much improved. And no it's not because of the flat beer. And yes I know we're not talking about a 4-star Michelin here, but come on. Smile for christ sake!
For the food alone, I will definitely head to Delux again. The food sealed it for me. Unique flavor combos that sitll hit home.
